Petition docket books, 1913-1919.

The Public Service Commission had general supervision of common carriers, railroads, street railways, electric railroads, steamships, telephone and telegraph companies, and railroad grade crossings (St 1913, c 784). In carrying out its responsibilities, the commission held hearings relating to petitions brought by companies and their customers and issued decisions and orders. Petition docket books were created to assign docket numbers to petitions received and to record related actions.

The Public Service Commission was established in 1913 as an enlargement of the Board of Railroad Commissioners and with additional functions transferred from the Highway Commission. It was abolished in 1919, when its functions were combined with these of the Board of Gas and Electric Light Commissioners in the Dept. of Public Utilities.
